The traditional Russian history begins around the year 862, with Kievan Rus’ and the first union of the East Slavic state, which was founded in 882. But the history of the Russian people isn’t peaceful. There was a constant conflict between the bordering nations, and they were later conquered by the Mongol Empire, with the Mongol invasion of Rus between the years 1237 and 1240. Around 50% of the population died during the invasion.
Afterwards, Moscow became the cultural center of that territory. This would mark the slow process of expansion and unification and five centuries later the Russian Empire will be born. Even though Russia was a giant compared to other countries, it was weak. When Peter begun his westernization, the bear was awoken.
