Thousand Years of War – The Journey Of The British Battle Equipment

Here you will see a beautiful display of images depicting the many items soldiers had to carry to war.  The original author of this display is Thom Atkinson, and if anyone is interested we shall embed the images so that you can follow and find more of his work.

1. Huscarl Gear, Battle of Hastings 1066

This was a major battle and it had a key role in the history of England. In this image you can see the weapons used by the soldiers in that time period. The seax knife, the classic barbarian sword, the axe and the low defense gear are all depicted in this picture.

2. Mounted Knight, Late Crusade Period

Here we can see a huge difference in the weaponry. Just by looking at the spear, sword, axe we can see a lot of advancement. As for the armor, the helm and shoes are changed while chain mail is still primarily used. The other equipment is still the same.

3. Archer, 100 Years War

We cannot compare the knight and the archer on their armor and weaponry. The longbow had a basic design yet it was one of the most deadly weapons in the hundred years war. The English archers had the longbow while the Frenchmen had the crossbow.

4. Battle of the Roses

The evolution of armor is simply amazing, it’s quality has drastically improved here. The personal items are still the same except for the clothing.

5. Caliverman, Tilbury – 1588

Metal armor wasn’t used anymore because guns were invented that can pierce through the then used materials.

6. New Model Army Musketeer, Battle of Naseby – 1645

7. Private Sentinel, Battle of Malplaquet – 1709

8. Private Soldier, Battle of Waterloo – 1815

9. Private Soldier, Rifle Brigade, Battle of Alma – 1854

10. Private Soldier, Battle of the Somme – 1916

11. Lance Corporal, Parachute Regiment, Battle of Arnhem – 1944

12. Royal Marine Commando, Falklands War – 1982
